I’m Ibrahim Mohamed Ali, a social work graduate from SIMAD University. On September 13th, I submitted my application for an internship program offered by RAAGSAN Consulting. I was excited to be among the ten shortlisted interns selected for the program. Our official kickoff occurred on September 20th, following five days of comprehensive training. This marked the start of our fieldwork for the Daadihiye Citizen Engagement program, where we collected data from diverse communities in Mogadishu on the challenges, services needed, and their interaction with local governments regarding service delivery.
What makes my story uniquely special is that I live with a visual disability. Over these two months, they extended their support and accommodated my unique needs. My time at RAAGSAN was not just about work but about being part of a family. The warmth with which they embraced each intern, upholding our rights and well-being, made me feel right at home.
Reflecting on my internship, I gained a wealth of experience. Some of the skills and insights I acquired included:
- Navigating the field of Research: Through meticulous training and hands-on experience, I grasped the fundamental principles of conducting research in the field. This exposure has been invaluable in expanding my understanding of the world of social work.
- Digital Skills: My internship introduced me to diverse applications such as ODK and Microsoft Outlook. These newfound tech skills have not only empowered me but have also opened doors to streamlined work processes.
- Conducting Interviews: Interacting and conducting face-to-face interviews with individuals from various walks of life has been enlightening. It has allowed me to develop a more profound empathy for different communities and comprehend the challenges they grapple with.
- Communication Skills: Engaging in effective writing courses geared towards composing case studies, blog posts, and reports has significantly refined my communication abilities.
My interaction with communities of people living with disabilities unveiled a wealth of insights into their struggles and daily lives. This firsthand exposure has deepened my understanding of their realities and the changes needed. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the entire RAAGSAN Consulting team, with a special shoutout to the Managing Director. Their open-hearted acceptance, unwavering support, and the conducive work environment they fostered have been pivotal in enriching this journey.
In a world that thrives on diversity, RAAGSAN has not just been a workplace for me; it has been a sanctuary of learning, a platform for empowerment, and inclusivity.
